Name: Todd Glaser
Age: 22
Hometown: San Diego

CVMedia: So how long have you been shooting Photos for?

T. Glaser: i was always into shooting photos when i was really young, but I got really into shooting photos in the water when i was about 15 or 16 when Andre Botha let me use his housing a couple of times in Hawaii...we would trade off

CVMedia: Andre Botha is a nut! Did he (andre Botha) play a big part in you becoming a photographer? Or was it something you were already into?

T. Glaser: I was always into photography, but staying with him and traveling around with him for a number of years when I was younger played a big roll with my love of fisheye in the barrel Also guys like Jeremiah Klein and Ross McBride would help me out with my settings and little tricks to get better images

This is my friend Bummy on a trip to Mainland Mex this past July. He got really sick from a Ham and Cheese sandwich on the plane ride down and spent the better half of the trip puking his brains out. This was about a week into the trip and he barely had the strength to make it to the bathroom but me being the good friend I am went in and shot photos to remind him of all the fun he was having. This is one of my favorite photos and the note just makes it that much funnier.

CVMedia: So from there it was just a hand on experience, Just learning shot by shot, or did you start taking classes or workshops of that sort?

T. Glaser: I learned shot by shot at the beginning. I read a lot of books and studied the camera manual every chance I could. I remember the first few times I read it I didn't know what anything meant, but as time progressed things started to sink in. I began a formal education in photography in May of 2005. I graduate in April of this coming up year and it's been quite the journey Kevin Zacher is a photographer whom I interned with for about a year and a half and in that time I learned so much. He's played a huge roll in my photography Having friends who are good waveriders doesn't hurt either when trying to shoot action shots

CVMedia: So where are you studying photography at right now?

T. Glaser:I'm studying at the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara.

Skipp is the man. Here he is on the 3rd wave of the trip getting a bomb. After this wave he came up and said kidding around "you better not of fucked that one up!" I was relieved to say the least when I saw the film 2 weeks later...

CVMedia: Looking at your photos (on tglaser.com) I can tell its mainly surf photography. But you do a lot of different work. What you favorite topic to shoot, Action, Landscape, Street/Lifestyles. etc?

T. Glaser: I go through different moods, depending on whats going on at the time. Surfing has always played a big roll in my life so it was natural for me to lean towards shooting that, but I want to capture the lifestyle of the sport and the people involved surfers are truly a unique tribe. and when I say surfers, I mean waveriders...bodyboarders, surfers, bodysurfers longboarders, I met this guy named Jason Hale, he's a professional kayaker as well as a doctor, the guy is a fucking nut...goes off the craziest ledges on this little kayak(www.spotyourlanding.com)

CVMedia: Since you mainly been a surf photographer, which has been your favorite trip, and which waverider do you enjoy working with?

T.Glaser: theres never been a favorite trip...each one is pretty rad in its own way.

CVMedia: yeah, i know what you mean...they all have there ups and down. glory stories and all.

T.Glaser: In July Skipp, lackey and my friend Bummy went down to Mainland and while Skipp and Lackey were getting mental waves Bummy was puking his brains out for a week straight had to go home early and barely surfed this last trip I was on about a month ago, we went for 6 days and scored perfect waves in a place I swore I would never go back to In April this year I spent 10 days on a 115 foot yacht cruising the Tahitian Islands surfing..who woulda thought?

CVMedia: Damn...living the life!

T. Glaser: so yeah, each trip is sick and brings a new story to tell whether its sleeping in boardbags or in 5-star hotels

This is my friend Gavin doing a snap during the San Diego fires a couple years ago, still one of my favorite photos.

CVMedia: So could you say your living off shooting photos right now?

T. Glaser:Going to school full time has limited how much I can be shooting, but for going to school full time it's not that bad enough not to have to bus tables or park cars, not that theres anything wrong with that

CVMedia: yeah, i used to park cars so take it easy! haha...yeah...Shit, Its better than flipping burgers at the local jack in the box.

T. Glaser: hahaha. I know Tyler does too, but he's killing it.he's a manager now. He works hard for that though. I think he likes working valet because he's running alll the time and it helps his bball game.

CVMedia: Could he take you on the b.ball court?

T. Glaser: on the bball court yeah, but we both know what happens when we get in the water...sorry tyler, I can go higher

CVMedia: (laughs) hows the claim! You better watch out, hes going to read this. He might kick you out of SRP too....

T. Glaser: (laughs) nah, he's one of my best friends. He's stepped it up, he fucking killed it at the Pipe contest last year, not to mention the T-walk

CVMedia: if people only knew about the t walk

T. Glaser: oh shit..we've said too much

CVMedia: your right, lets move on.

This shot of Dan Malloy was taken in March of this year at Rincon. He was ripping so hard this day on a bamboo surfboard, really amazing to watch him surf this day.

Lackey deciding where to paddle out from.

Thanks to Pete Moore from Movement for putting this trip together and holding the flash to allow us to get this shot of Lackey snapping it.

I like to shoot film.

CVMedia: Why do you still choose to shoot film, when practically the whole world has switched over to digital?

T. Glaser: both film and digital are tools to create images theres no right or wrong way to capture them my biggest complaint about digital is that the cameras are so expensive in order to get something equivalent in quality that you can get with a $50 film camera people are scared to shoot film because there not confident in there settings Film has been around forever and it's proven to work Digital is great too, but for now, I can't justify spending so much on a digital camera that will be replaced in 6 months and have to get a new housing and lens as well...Not to mention that all the images are looking the same If every shot is perfectly white balanced and shot with the same camera a lot of creativity can be lost keyword...CAN BE.there are people doing amazing work with digital cameras

CVMedia: Do you ever shoot digital?

T. Glaser: I do shoot digital when that is the right tool for the job, I don't use a screwdriver to drive nails in wood, I use a hammer. When digital is the right tool for the job it is used

Skippy and I trying to work the angles on the same trip to Mex.

CVMedia: so im sure you have an arsenal when it comes to equipment...Can you run us through your set up?

T. Glaser: Currently I have a Canon EOS 1v, Canon A2, Canon 30d, 70-200mm, 85mm, 15mm fisheye, 2 flashes, its not about the equipment

CVMedia: You've already mentioned a few...But who are photographers that inspire you, that you really look up to?

T. Glaser: Steve Sherman, Kevin Zacher, Pete Taras, Cole Barash, Sammy Olson, Patrick Trefz, Scott Aichner, Ross McBride, Anton Corbijn, Phillipe Halsband, Taylor Steele, the list can go on for a long time

CVMedia: ...about life in general?

T. Glaser: the same can be applied to the list above, but my parents, my sister Sara, and my friends inspire me the most

CVMedia: What are some photographic achievement's of yours till this day?

When I was at the lab today I picked up 6 rolls of film and not one of them was black

CVMedia: (laughs) what about publication, covers, advertising etc?

T. Glaser: That's totally dependent on a couple peoples opinions on your photos, but being able to sit in a room with some of the photographers i Iook upto the most and talk photography is a big deal to me Shooting a Billabong ad was pretty rad, and the Cover of Movement Mag was an amazing feeling too. It doesnt get better than coming back from a trip or photoshoot and huddling around the light table with a couple beers reminiscing on the waves that day and how much fun it was to make the images

CVMedia: A few beers.....What do you prefer, beer or liquor?

T. Glaser: depending on the situation...Beers if were cruising...Tequila or Jager if it's gonna be a big night out. Jager Bombs are evil though

CVMedia: yeah. i tend to black out whenever those come out

This shot of Lackey never got run, but I reckon its the best shot we got from our last trip to Puerto together. He made this one!

CVMedia: A good read?

T. Glaser: last book was Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

CVMedia: What are your future plans/ goals as a photographer?

T. Glaser: My ultimate goal is to shoot the cover of the Surfers Journal. We will see, time will tell

CVMedia: Any last words...

T. Glaser: I just want to thank my parents for being so supportive, my sister Sara and my friends for being there. You the man Juan! We need to go on another surf trip

CVMedia: Your the man Todd. I really look forward to hearing more about you in the years to come. The best of luck to you and your photography! It was a pleasure.

T. Glaser: yeah for sure.
